Removal of 8 Pile and 4 Pile Bridged Complex
Owner: Dynamic Offshore Resources
Location: High Island A-517, Gulf of Mexico
Project Duration: 08/2011
This project involved the complete removal and reefing of the High Island A-517 “A” and “A-Auxiliary” complex in a water depth of 211’. The structure consisted of a bridged 4-pile production platform and an 800 ton 8-pile drill platform, which facilitated 12 wells. Using the derrick barge E. P. Paup, the decks were removed and sea fastened to a cargo barge and transported to shore for disposal.
The jackets were permitted for reef-in-place through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Artificial Reef Program. The upper sections of the jackets were severed at 90’ below the waterline utilizing internal abrasive cutting tools, diamond wire saws, hydraulic shears and underwater torches operated by the diving crew. Once severed, the upper sections of each jacket were lifted in a vertical position and placed onto the seafloor at the designated reef site, adjacent to their original location.
