Project Description
This project involved the construction of a levee which is a vital part of the Westbank hurricane protection system. The levee on Lake Cataouatche protects the citizens of Avondale, Louisiana, from the damaging effects of hurricane storm surges. The work involves the placement of approximately 512,400 cubic yards of granular material, 230,200 cubic yards of compacted clay material and 409,800 cubic yards of un-compacted clay material. All of the clay material for the project was mined from borrow sites on the project right of way using Manson draglines. The project also included relocating the drainage canal adjacent to the levee. The strengthened levee created by the project totals approximately three miles in length.
